Gardner Lookout on Mt. Tamalpais.
This time-lapse video featuring the Gardner Fire Lookout on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, has stunning photography of the Bay Area from a bird’s eye view. The staff pick video at vimeo.com features fog, the Golden Gate bridge, the Bay Area at night, and the fire lookout tower itself.
That round device in the center of the tower’s room is an Osborne Fire Finder, which is used to accurately locate a smoke column visible from the tower’s viewscape so a fire crew can be dispatched. Invented in 1915, the device is still used today in fire lookouts across the nation.
The video seems to have struck a chord with internet video fans, garnering over 88,000 viewers for the duration of its 7-minute play time.
